SEO Techniques

SEO Techniques   One of the key principles behind any successful search engine optimisation campaign is the SEO techniques that will be used in the redesign and optimisation of your website.

There are a variety of ethical, and unethical, SEO techniques and this page will look at some of those in greater detail.

Tricks of the Trade

There are a wide range of unethical SEO techniques that an SEO company can use in their optimisation of a website, but in actual fact can have a negative effect on your website and the results that you expect to receive from your website promotion. It is always advisable to check what SEO techniques a company uses so you do not unnecessarily hinder the progress of your website.

The SEO techniques that are deemed as unethical include hidden text, title spamming, meta-tag spamming, NOSCRIPT commands and gateway pages.

Hidden text is one of the more commonly used unethical SEO techniques. Basically, hidden text is relatively simple; a list of keywords are placed on a web page and the colour used for the words is matched to the background colour of the page so that the person viewing the site cannot see the keywords, but the spiders that search through the pages will pick it up without a problem. However, as search engine spiders become cleverer, they are learning to recognize this SEO technique and stopping picking up the hidden text.

Title spamming is another on the list of SEO techniques that is deemed as being unethical. Title spamming is again a relatively simple process. A long list of keywords is placed in the title tag of the web page for the spiders to pick up. It is advisable to put a small piece of descriptive text in the title of the page.

Another of the unethical SEO techniques is Meta Tag spamming. A Meta-Tag is part of the coding of the webpage that spiders use as a reference point for the content of a webpage. It has been known for some companies to spam the “keyword” tag of the Meta –Tag with a long collection of keywords and then repeat this word for word in the “description” tag of the Meta-Tag. This is part of very unethical SEO techniques and the correct way to use the meta-tags is to place keywords and a description in that is relevant to the page itself.

NOSCRIPT commands is yet another of the unethical SEO techniques that can be used in an SEO to enhance your company website ranking. NOSCRIPT is again not visible to the user when viewing a webpage, but it is seen by search engine spiders.

Gateway pages are an unethical SEO technique that simply redirects a site to your website by use of a script command. Sex websites are a good example of this form of unethical SEO techniques. The principle behind it is to optimise web pages for a particular search term and then when a user clicks on the page, they are redirected through to another site.

As shown above, there are a variety of unethical SEO techniques that internet marketing companies can use. You should always be sure that the search engine optimisation company that you choose employ ethical SEO techniques as part of a successful SEO campaign.
